the second Wednesday of July, in the year 1916, and on the second
Wednesday of July in each and every fourth year thereafter, by the
qualified voters of each of wards Nos. 1, 4 and 5, a Commissioner who
shall hold office for a term of four years or until his successor is duly
elected and qualified. The Commissioners shall provide the official ballots
for such election or elections, the form and arrangement of such ballot
to be as they shall be by order prescribed except that all candidates for
the same office shall be grouped together and the names shall be arranged
alphabetically on said ballot. The Commissioners shall deliver, or cause
to be delivered, at each polling place on the day of said election to the
judges of election before the opening hour, the said registries of voters
and a sufficient number of the said official ballots, not less, however, than
twice the number of registered voters at each polling place or ward, and
one of such ballots shall be handed by the judges of election to the
voters as they shall apply for them for the purpose of voting and shall
be accepted by the judges or counted in canvassing the vote provided that
nothing herein shall be deemed to prevent candidates for the various offices
to have sample ballots, to be provided for at their own expense, for instruct-
ing the voters. After each name on said ballot and to the right thereof,
shall be a square upon which the voter shall make a cross-mark to indi-
cate the candidate of his choice. If any voter cannot read or write, or is
disabled by reason of any physical infirmity, he may ask one of the judges
of election to mark his ballot as he desires. When a voter offers to vote
the judges shall ascertain by reference if his name is on the registry of
voters.
In every election, whether such election by the regular election or any
special election, the polls shall be opened at noon and closed at 5 P. M.
In all elections to ascertain the sense of the qualified voters of the town
as to the passage of any ordinance or ordinances the election shall be held
by wards and all the polls shall be opened at 2 P. M. and closed at 5 P. M.,
on the day appointed for such election.

52. Within the 20 days next preceding any primary election or any
special election held under this Article, the Commissioners shall appoint
two clerks and two judges of elections in each ward in which such elec-
tion is to be held, who shall serve as such at said primary election and at
the general election to follow in the wards for which they are respectively
appointed of whom one judge and one clerk of election shall be of different
political party from the others, one of said judges shall also be designated,
at the time of appointment, as return judge. At the time of the appoint-
ment of the judges and clerks of election, the Commissioners shall also
name a polling place in each ward. The Commissioners shall publish in
one or more newspapers published in Cambridge the names of the judges
and clerks of election, the polling place in each ward and the date and
object of the election; said notice shall be published at least twice before
each election and the last publication shall not be more than ten nor less.
