And shall at the same time deposit with the town clerk the sum of $5.00
which sum shall be paid over to the Commissioners of Cambridge for the
purpose of defraying in whole or in part the expenses of such election.
Immediately upon the expiration of the time for filling such statements
of candidacy the town clerk shall cause to be advertised in two newspapers
published in Cambridge, one of which shall be a daily newspaper, if there
be a daily newspaper published in said town, the names of the persons who
have filed proper statements of their candidacy and have deposited the
filing fee of $5.00 as hereinbefore provided, designating the office for
which such person is a candidate and the ward in which such person is a
candidate if the office is one to be filled by the voters of a single ward, and
if the office is one to be filled by the voters of the entire town, voting by
wards, the said advertisement shall so state. The town clerk shall at least
two days prior to the date of said town election prepare the ballots for such
primary elections, which ballots shall be authenticated by a fac-simile of
his signature, and no ballots other than those so authenticated shall be used
at said election, and he shall deliver or cause to be delivered to the judges
of said election at the polling place in each ward wherein said election is to
be held the registries of voters and a number of ballots equal to twice the
number of registered voters in the ward in which such polling place is
located, to be furnished to the voters upon application at the respective
polling places. The ballots shall be printed upon plain, substantial white
paper in fair, legible type, and shall be headed "Primary Ballot," and the
names of the candidates for the respective offices thereon shall be arranged
in alphabetical order, and upon each group of names shall appear the
words "Vote For One," and after the name of each candidate shall be a
square in which the voter may make a cross-mark for the candidate of his
choice. In other respects, the form and arrangement shall be in the discre-
tion of the Commissioners of Cambridge, except that nothing deceptive or
calculated to mislead a voter shall be allowed to be printed upon said
ballots, and sample ballots furnished by the candidates themselves or
printed by the Commissioners of Cambridge, and advertised in the news-
papers, if in the discretion of said Commissioners the cost of such printing
and advertising be wise and judicious shall be freely allowed to the voters.
The persons who are qualified to vote at the general election shall be
qualified to vote at the primary election, and challenges can be made by not
more than two persons to be appointed at the time of the opening of the
polls by the judges of election, or such challenge shall be made in person
by the candidate themselves. Upon the closing of the polls the judges of
election shall immediately count the ballots and ascertain the number of
votes cast in each ward or polling place for each of the candidates, and
