2042 ARTICLE 8.

P. L. L., 1888, Art, 8, sec. 321. 1884, ch. 45.

427. Whenever any doubt may exist as to the proper location or width
of any road, the County Commissioners may cause the same to be sur-
veyed, and in their discretion make such alterations as the convenience
of the public may require, and may compensate any owner of land along
said road who may be entitled to compensation in consequence of said
alterations.

SIGN BOARDS.

1900. ch. 84, sec. 1.

428. The Board of County Commissioners of Cecil County may in
their discretion erect and maintain boards so painted with letters and
figures as to indicate the direction of and distance to the nearest city, town,
village, postoffice or other places of importance in said county; said boards
shall be placed at the intersection of all county roads in said county, and
in a conspicuous place, upon substantial posts; said boards shall be not less
than six inches broad, and not less than two feet long.

429. After the erection of said boards, they shall be repaired, renewed
and maintained by the County Commissioners of said county.

1900, ch. 84, sec. 3.

430. Any person who shall deface, tear down or destroy any of said
boards or posts maliciously shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon
indictment and conviction shall be fined a sum not exceeding ten dollars,
and in default of the "payment of said fine and costs of prosecution shall be
confined in the county jail for a period not exceeding ten days.

SCHOOLS.

P. L. L., 1888. Art. 8, sec. 322. 1876, ch. 172

431. The School Commissioners shall not expend for school purposes
or for any other purpose, a greater sum of money in any one year than shall
be annually levied for school purposes by the County Commissioners, in
addition to the amount annually received by said School Commissioners
from the treasurer of the State, and they shall not borrow any sum of
money in any one year which, added to the actual receipts for such year
would exceed their yearly income as provided for by law; and it shall be
lawful for the holders of any indebtedness or any evidence of indebtedness
contracted in violation of this section, to sue upon or enforce the same in
any court of law or equity in this State, against said School Commissioners,
either individually or collectively.

432. In case of the destruction of any school house by fire or otherwise,
