544. The Road Directors aforesaid shall during the month of January,
1916, and biennially in the months of January thereafter, appoint as Al-
legany County Roads Engineer a skillful and experienced man over twen-
ty-five years of age, who shall be a practical Civil Engineer, who shall give
his entire time to his office, for two years beginning on the first day of
February next succeeding the date of his appointment, or until his succes-
sors is appointed and qualified, unless sooner removed from such office by
the Road Directors upon the recommendation of the Grand Jury for Alle-
gany County or for cause by said Road Directors deemed sufficient, and,
in such case, said Road Directors shall immediately select his successor for
the unexpired term. The term of the Roads Engineer shall be two years
beginning on the first day of February next succeeding his appointment.
Before entering upon his duties the Roads Engineer shall qualify by tak-
ing an oath before the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Allegany County to
faithfully perform the duties of his office, and by giving a bond to the said
Road Directors in the penal sum of five thousand ($5,000) dollars condi-
tioned for the faithful performance of his duties. The term of office for
the present Roads Engineer for Allegany County shall expire on the first
day of February, 1916.

545. The Allegany County Roads Engineer shall inspect the roads of
each district in the county as often as may be necessary and recommend
to the Road Directors such repairs and improvements as he may think
advisable; and he shall also submit specifications and plans for the re-
pairs and improvements of any road or bridge when called upon by said
Road Directors, and shall assist said Road Directors in any manner in
the performance of their duties.

546. The Allegany County Roads Engineer shall receive a salary of
eighteen hundred dollars annually, in monthly installments, and four
hundred dollars or so much thereof as may be necessary to meet the trav-
elling, office and other expenses, included drawings, specifications, etc.,
incurred in the discharge of his duties, which shall be paid by the road
directors as other monthly expenditures upon presentation of the account
with properly signed vouchers; and the minimum wages to be paid by
the road directors, or by persons engaged as contractors of road work by
the road directors, for labor on said roads shall be one dollar and seventy-
five cents per day for adult workmen, and all wages shall be determined
by the road directors.
