nor shall their force be increased, except under peculiar stress of cir-
cumstances, and then only by and with the consent of the County Com-
missioner having control of said supervisor; and he shall begin work on
the first Monday in April and cease work on the fifteenth day of October,
unless specially directed by the County Commissioners to do otherwise.

252. The said supervisor shall have power to hire such horses, oxen,
wagons, carts, plows and other implements, purchase brush and other
materials necessary for the successful performance of his duties and shall
submit an itemized account of the same at each monthly meeting of the
Board of County Commissioners.

253. The Board of County Commissioners shall, during the month in
which said supervisors shall be engaged in working on the public roads,
either at their regular meeting or at special meeting, if the same shall
be necessary, audit the accounts of the supervisors and pass upon the
same, allowing in such computation ten hours of active work to consti-
tute one day, and twenty-six days to constitute one month; and each
laborer shall be paid at the rate of twenty-six dollars per month, and each
supervisor at the rate of thirty-five dollars per month; and said Board of
County Commissioners shall deliver to each supervisor and each laborer,
signed by at least two members of the Board, an order on the collector of
taxes for the sum of money which may be found to be due to each of them
as aforesaid, and to each supervisor the amount due for hire of carts,
wagons, horses, material, etc., during the preceding month, and in attesta-
tion of the payment of the same he shall return proper vouchers from
each claimant.

254. The County Commissioners shall receive for any extra time they
may be actually employed in their office adjusting and settling road ac-
counts with supervisors, or the time in which he is engaged in general
supervision of the roads, the same per diem they receive as County Com-
missioners, not to exceed the sum of twenty-five dollars each for any one
year.

255. It shall be the duty of each of the County Commissioners of Cal-
vert County, on or before the first day of April of each and every year,
to examine the bridges in his election district and ascertain what amount
of money will be necessary to build or repair the bridges in such district,
and if, in his judgment, the amount required shall amount, to two hun-
dred dollars or more in either district, it shall be the duty of the County
Commissioners at the annual levy, to levy said estimated amounts over
