2182 UNITED STATES. [ART. 96

State required for sites for custom houses, courthouses, postoffices,
arsenals or other public buildings whatever, or for any other purposes
of the government.

1906, ch. 743, sec. 2.

32. Exclusive jurisdiction in and over any land so acquired by
the United States shall be and the same is hereby ceded to the United
States for all purposes except the service upon such sites of all civil
and criminal process of the courts of this State, but the jurisdiction
so ceded shall continue no longer than the said United States shall own
such lands.

33. The jurisdiction ceded shall not vest until the United States
shall have acquired the title to said lands by purchase, condemnation
or otherwise; and so long as the said lands shall remain the property
of the United States when acquired as aforesaid, and no longer, the
same shall be and continue exempt and exonerated from all State,
county and municipal taxation, assessment, or other charges which may
be levied or imposed under the authority of this State.

1908, ch. 217.

34. The consent of the State of Maryland is hereby given to the
acquisition by the United States, by purchase or gift, or by condemna-
tion, according to due process of law, of such lands in the mountain
region of Maryland as in the opinion of the federal government may
be needed to the establishment of such a national forest reserve in that
region; provided, that the State shall retain a concurrent jurisdiction
with the United States in and over such lands so far that civil process
in all cases, and such criminal process as may issue under the authority
of the State against any person charged with the commission of any
crime without or within said jurisdiction, may be executed in like
manner as if this and the succeeding section had not been passed;
and provided, that in all condemnation proceedings the rights of the
federal government shall be limited to the specific objects set forth by
the laws of the United States in regard to forest reserves, and that
such proceedings shall be conducted in a manner not inconsistent with
the constitution and laws of Maryland.

1908. ch. 217.

35. The consent of the State of Maryland is hereby given to the
passage by congress of such laws or ordinances as it may deem necessary
or proper for the making and establishment of such rules and regula-
tions as may, in its judgment, be necessary for the management, control
and protection of such lands as may be from time to time acquired by
the United States under the provisions of section 34.
