LAWS OF MARYLAND. [Ch. 617]

CHAPTER 617.

AN ACT to add five additional sections to Article 22 of the
Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland, title "Washington
County," sub-title "Roads," to follow section 342, to be known
as sections 342A, 342s, 342c, 342D and 342E, and to repeal
all acts or parts of acts so far as the same are inconsistent
with the provisions of this act, providing additional duties
and powers for the County Commissioners of Washington
County; for the purpose of purchasing materials, machin-
ery, implements and equipment, and for the employment of
additional agencies for road and bridge work, including a
County Road Superintendent; a system of construction, care
and repair of public highways and bridges and the control
thereof, and prescribing certain duties of the County Road
Superintedent

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That five new sections be and the same are hereby added
to Article 22 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland,
title "Washington County," sub-title "Roads," to follow after
section 342 thereof, and to be designated as sections 342A,
342B, 342C, 342D and 342E, and to read as follows:

SEC. 342A. All matters pertaining to and affecting the pub-
lic Highways, Roads and Bridges of Washington County shall
be under the general control and supervision of the County
Commissioners of Washington County, who are hereby given
the power to enter into and make any and all contracts for
materials, machinery, implements, and equipment for the build-
ing, construction and repairing of such public highways, and to
employ or to direct the employment of so many and such agents,
assistant superintendents, foremen, inspectors, mechanics and
laborers as may be found necessary for the proper construc-
tion, care, improvement and maintenance of the same, and to
fix the rate of compensation thereof, and to provide for such
clerical and other assistance as may be required by them.

SEC. 342B. On or before May 1st, A. D. 1912, and annu-
ally thereafter, the said County Commissioners may appoint a
Road Superintendent for Washington county, who shall be a
competent man of good judgment, having the necessary qualifi-
cations and practical experience in road construction, and who
shall direct and manage the whole matter of grading and con-
structing public roads and the repair thereof, and the construc-
