and supplanted by a new bridge at Denton) to or near a point
further up the river known as "Downes Wharf," on the west
side of said river, the object being to connect in a most direct
and practical manner with the county road on the west side
leading from the old brick mill site to Denton, and 'known as
the "River Road," and on the east to connect with the public
road leading from "Passipees Landing" to the State Road, the
exact position to be determined by the County Commissioners
of Caroline county; provided, however, it shall not be higher
up the river than "Passipes Landing" nor further down the
river than "Downes Wharf"; and the said County Commission-
ers of Caroline county are hereby empowered and authorized to
acquire by condemnation, purchase or otherwise, all the lands
and materials necessary for the removal and reconstruction of
said old "single-track iron bridge," and its abutments, causeways
and connections for the convenience of public travel, and said
bridge when so removed and reconstructed shall be maintained
and be kept in proper repair by Caroline county as a free bridge.
In the event of the acquirement of lands and materials as
aforesaid by condemnation, the procedure shall be the same as
that presented by Article 23 of the Code of Public General
Laws of Maryland for the condemnation of property by cor-
porations (that is to say, by sections 360 to 365, both inlcusive,
of said article as contained in the Code of 1904, together with
all amendments thereof or supplements thereto).

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the abutments of said bridge
and pier and foundation for the support and action of the draw
connected therewith, shall be built in a most secure and sub-
stantial manner; the present draw to be removed with and con-
sidered as a part of the old bridge, and to be so placed in recon-
struction as to afford convenient passage to boats up and down
the river, which shall at all times be open on the approach of
vessels, so as not to delay or interrupt their passage.

SEC. 3. Be it enacted, That the County Commissioners of
Caroline county be and they are hereby authorized and directed
to levy on the assessable property of Caroline county such sums
of money as may be necessary to carry out and secure the pro-
visions of this act.

SEC. 4. Be it enacted, That there shall be appointed annu-
ally by the County Commissioners of Caroline county some
competent person to act as bridge keeper, whose duty shall be to
attend to the opening and closing of the draw of said bridge
when so required, and also to attend to such other duties in
regard to keeping said bridge in safe and proper condition for
