PHILLIPS LEE GOLDSBOROUGH, GOVERNOR. 487

CHAPTER 339.

AN ACT to give the consent of the State of Maryland to the
United States, acquiring by purchase or otherwise, sufficient
land in the State of Maryland for the construction of a
road or highway, from the District of Columbia to Winthrop
Post Office, in Charles county, in the State of Maryland,
with the right to condemn such land as it may find necessary
for such road or highway.

WHEREAS, The United States Government is now seized and
possessed of certain reservations used in connection with
the Navy Department of said government, on, or bordering
upon the Potomac River, and situate, lying and being within
the State of Maryland; and,

WHEREAS, Many employees of said United States Government,
who do not live upon said government reservation, find it
difficult to reach said reservation by land; and,

WHEREAS, At times the Potomac River is so blockaded with
ice as to make access to said reservations extremely difficult
for the authorities of said government to visit the same by
water; and,

WHEREAS, Upon the petition of a number of said employees,
and many citizens of the State of Maryland, it has been
proposed that the Congress of the United States construct a
road or highway from the District of Columbia, through
Prince George's county, and through that portion of Charles
county to what is now known as Winthrop Post Office, by
way of Fort Washington, Fort Foote, and Indian Head, for
the use of said United States Government, and for the use
' of the public generally, under such regulations, nevertheless,
as to the latter use, as said government may prescribe; and,

WHEREAS, A bill is now being formulated for introduction
before the Congress of the United States for an appropria-
tion for the necessary survey and estimate cost of such road
or highway; therefore,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the consent of the State of Maryland be, and the
same is hereby given to the acquisition by the Government of
the United States of such land, riparian rights or right of
