476 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [Ch. 331]

Commissioners shall deem that the public convenience and good
may require them to be greater or less than thirty feet wide.

126. The County Commissioners may cause to be placed at
such of the forks of the public roads as they may think proper,
finger boards or signs showing the prominent places to which
said roads lead and the distance to such places and may also
erect mile posts and signs giving the number of miles to and
from prominent places. Any person tearing down or defacing
such finger boards, signs or mile posts shall be guilty of a
misdemeanor, and, on conviction thereof before a justice of
the peace, shall be fined not less than ten dollars nor more
than fifty dollars and be committed to jail until fine and costs
are paid, and all fines collected shall be paid over to the
County Commissioners of Wicomico County.

127. Whenever any mill dam may be built in Wicomico
county across any branch or stream when the public road crosses
such branch or stream, the top of said dam shall be at least
twenty-four feet wide and the bridges on said dam of the same
width, and the owner or owners shall keep the dam and bridges
in good repair, so that the public road shall in no way be
affected injuriously thereby.

And it shall be the duty of the owner or owners of any mill
property where the county or public road crosses on the dam,
to keep such mill dam and the bridges across the flood gates
or flume ways in a safe condition and order; and if the owner
or owners thereof shall neglect for the space of thirty days to
repair and kecp in safe condition and order said dam and
bridges, the County Commissioners shall make such repair, and
the cost of the same shall be paid by the owner or owners of
said mill property to the County Commissioners within a
reasonable time after demand, and the cost of such repairs shall
be a first lien on said mill property, and be collectible by suit
and execution as debts are collected, unless the owner of such
mill property shall give thirty days' notice in writing to the
County Commissioners, that the mill or mills, with the priv-
ileges,) are abandoned. In such case the mill dam and its
bridges shall be kept in order and repair by the County Com-
missioners in the same manner as county or public roads and
bridges are required to be repaired and kept in order.

128. It shall be unlawful for any person or corporation
to place obstructions of any kind whatsoever upon the public
highways, roads, lanes, or bridges in Wicomico county, or
interfere with, injure or obstruct any public ditch or drain
thereof, or to plow, cultivate or make turning rows therein, or
in any manner to injure the surface or foundation of any such
