1202 LAWS OF MARYLAND. [Ch. 724]

post; thence S. 25 degrees, W. 686 feet to a post; thence S.
27 degrees, W. 476 feet to a locust tree; thence S, 3 degrees,
W. 750 feet to the corner of Footen's Stables; thence S. 25 1/2
degrees, W. 494 feet to an oak tree; thence S. 17 degrees, E.
1000 feet to a post near Potomac Dump; thence S. 78 degrees
E. 775 feet to the beginning at the Cucumber tree; and the
property within said lines shall be subject to such taxes and
such charges as may be deemed necessary by said Commission-
ers or majority of them to support and maintain the expenses
which may at any time be incurred in the government and
improvement of the said town.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the male citizens of Barton
aforesaid of the age of twenty-one years and upwards, being
citizens of the United States, who have resided in said town
for and during the space of six months next preceding the
third Monday in April in each and every year, at the usual
place for holding county elections in said town or at such place
as shall be designated by the Commissioners of Barton, are
authorized to elect five Commissioners for the said town, who
shall be owners of real estate and regular taxpayers in the said
town on an assessment of not less than five hundred dollars,
and who shall have resided within the limits of the same
for two years next preceding the election; also one clerk and
a bailiff, each of whom shall have resided in the said town for
two years next preceding their election. The Commissioners
elected under this act shall serve for one and two years, or
until their successors are elected and qualified, and it is herein
provided that the two Commissioners receiving the highest num-
ber of votes at the first election shall serve for two years, and
the three receiving the lowest number of votes shall serve for
one year; and at each succeeding election two Commissioners
shall be elected to serve for two years and three for one year
as above provided. The Clerk and Bailiff to be elected under
the provisions of this act shall, after they have qualified, hold
their offices or serve for one year, or until their successors are
elected and qualified.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the Commissioners, the
Clerk and the Bailiff elected under these provisions of this act
shall qualify on the first Monday in May of each year by taking
the following oath, to be administered by some justice of the
peace: I, ————, do swear (or affirm) that I will execute the
office of Commissioners of Barton, or Clerk or Bailiff (as the
case may be), to the best of my ability, without prejudice,
fear, favor or partiality; and that at their annual meeting on
said date the Commissioners shall elect some one of the said
