SEC. 270MMM. The city register upon receiving a ballot
box and the key therefor, shall note the condition of the seal
or stamp on .each box, and make an entry of the facts touching
the same in a book to be kept by them together with the name
of the officer who delivered the box. The city register shall
put them in a secure place to which the public shall in no case
have access, and shall safely keep them for the space of six
months from the date of such delivery at which time unless
previously notified to produce the same to be used in evidence
in some contested election or judicial or legislative investiga-
tion then pending, the city register shall in the presence .of the
board of aldermen destroy said ballots and poll books, also all
the said tallies including those delivered to the mayor of said
city, and shall record in the same book a certificate of the fact,
signed by judge or judges.

SEC. 270PPP. On the day following every election the city
register shall canvass every return so received from all the
polling precincts. Said canvass shall be publicly made. The
city register shall open all the original statements and returns
delivered or transmitted to him, and shall canvass and add
up the votes and make abstracts or statements thereof in the
following manner, as the case may require, namely: All votes
for mayor shall be written out in words at length on one sheet,
and in like manner, all votes for aldermen on another sheet;
all votes for or against any proposition or ordinance which may
be submitted to a vote of the people on another sheet. And
after recording said statement the city register shall make out
and deliver to each person having the highest number of votes
for the several city offices a certificate of election, on his appli-
cation. The city register shall also make a statement of the
whole number of votes given in each precinct of the city, with
the names of the candidates and the number of votes given for
each, in tabular form, and shall cause a copy of such statement
to be forthwith published in one or more of the newspapers
printed in the City of Frederick provided such official state-
ment shall be so published without charge.

SEC. 270SSSS. It shall be unlawful for the keeper of any
hotel, tavern, store, drinking establishment or any other place
where liquor is sold, or for any person or persons directly or
indirectly to sell, barter, give or dispose of any spirituous or
fermented liquors, ale or beer or intoxicating drinks of any
kind, on the day of any election for the office of mayor or alder-
men hereafter to be held in the City of Frederick; any person
violating the provisions of this section shall be liable to indict-
