Financial management
One innovation
that Maryland state
government is
planning to use to
change the face of
state financial control
in the future is the
Financial
Management
Information System
(FMIS).
FMIS is
destined to replace
most of the state's
existing accounting,
personnel,
budget and
procurement systems -
within parameters of
available funding -
with an on-line service,
eliminating much of
the current paperwork.
Kitty Pharos and other co-workers in the comptroller's General
Accounting Division will no longer be swimming in disbursement
transmittals and other documents, soon to be replaced by
electronic data under the full implementation of the Financial
Management Information System (FMIS).
The accounting side of FMIS will offer an on-line interactive capability for users
to key transactions directly into the system for processing by the General Accounting
Division. The integrated changeover promises to further standardize agency
accounting systems, provide more timely data and eliminate mountains of paperwork.
Designed to manage a growing workload and rising need for financial controls
without an expanding workforce, the full implementation of FMIS will make Maryland
the only state in the nation to offer a system that integrates so many diverse financial
control functions.
