ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DATA
Location and Size
Maryland is located on the East Coast in the South Atlantic Census Region and is bordered by the States of
Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, and by the District of Columbia. Maryland encompasses a
geographic area of 12,303 square miles and ranks 42nd among the fifty states in size. Maryland's land area
(exclusive of inland waterways and the 1,726 square miles of the Chesapeake Bay) is 9,874 square miles.
Population
Maryland's population is concentrated in urban areas, the seven counties and Baltimore City located in the
Baltimore and Washington corridor containing 31.7% of the State's land area and 82.2% of the population.* The
estimated 1978 population for the Baltimore SMSA was 2,145,000 and for the Maryland portion of the Washington
SMSA was 1,305,000. Overall, Maryland's projected population per square mile in 1978 was 418.4, making
Maryland the fifth most densly populated state in the Union.** The following table presents population trends of
