10 REPORT OF THE COMPTROLLER OF THE TREASURY
It has been my purpose in compiling this report to include in it
all information which might be desired by those interested in the
finances of the State. I trust I have done so, however, if there is
anyone who might wish to discuss any items of the work of the
office, I shall be very glad to receive an inquiry from him and dis-
cuss the business of the State further.
While the figures in the report speak for themselves, they deal
entirely with the past and are principally a matter of history at this
time. However, what has been happening during the past several
years has been painting a picture of the future that might possibly
be too expensive for the pocketbooks of our people. It seems to me
that a comparison of our present fiscal picture with the picture
presented in our report for the year 1941 (the fiscal year which
ended before World War II began) will furnish the best evidence
of the increase in the business of taxing and spending by the State.
The figures shown are not intended to be a comparison of the whole
picture, but of those items which are the heart of our fiscal set-up.
