$3,583,845.00. It is still $8,874,803 less than it was in
1877, the first year after the last assessment was made.
It must be evident to everyone who has any knowl-
edge of the property of this State that there has been a
great increase of wealth since then, and that if every
species of property subject to taxation was included in
the list that composes the assessable basis, the total
would be increased many millions of dollars.

PUBLIC SCHOOL LEVY.

The Levy for Public Schools for the year 1884 was
$469,593.22; the receipts were $495,841.20 and in excess
of the levy $26,247.98.

The disbursements were $516,579.20 against $468,970.17
for the year 1883, making a difference in favor of the
fiscal year just closed of $47,609.03, and was distributed
among the schools as follows:

" State Normal School, white............ 10,500 00

" Expenses of State Board of Education... 1,157 13
