County, as before the passage of this Act, and the watchman
shall perform such duties as may be required by the visitors.
SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That the said visitors shall regu-
late and provide the diet of the prisoners, procure necessary
bedding, clothing and medicines for their use, make such
repairs, alterations and improvements in and about the jail as
they may deem necessary, and the County Commissioners of
Anne Arundel County shall, upon the warrant of said visitors,
pay the salaries of the said jail officials and the other expenses

of conducting and running said jail; provided that no perma-
nent improvements shall be made to said jail except with the
approval of the County Commissioners of Anne Arundel
County, first had and obtained.

SEC. 9. And be it enacted, That the said visitors shall con-
duct said jail at the least possible cost to the taxpayers of
Anne Arundel County and of the City of Annapolis, and shall
file a report to the County Commissioners every three months
showing the actual cost of the institution for the three months
last past, and a similar report to the Mayor, Counsellor and
Aldermen of the City of Annapolis, showing the actual cost
of boarding and maintaining persons committed to said jail
under the ordinance of the City of Annapolis, which cost shall
be paid by said mayor, counsellor and aldermen to said vis-
itors, and be by them applied to the expenses of conducting
said jail.

be employed
for compen-
sation.

SEC. 10. And be it enacted, That said Board of Visitors is
hereby authorized and empowered to employ persons confined
in said jail at labor, either within or without the jail, upon
such terms as they may deem proper, and are hereby fully
authorized to make all necessary contracts to carry out -the
provisions of this Act and section, and to apportion the earn-
ings of the persons confined in said jail between the jail and
the person earning the same, and to pass all rules and regula-
tions which may, in their judgment, be proper to compel such
persons as are confined in said jail to labor and work in accord-
ance with the provisions of this section.

Previous Acts
repealed.

SEC. 11. And be it enacted, That all Acts or parts of Acts
relating to the duty of said sheriff in relation to said jail or
fixing his compensation for boarding prisoners or for other
work, and all Acts or parts of Acts inconsistent with the pro-
visions of this Act be and the same are hereby repealed.
SEC. 12. And be it enacted, That this Act shall take effect
from the first day of November, nineteen hundred and one,
