may determine it may be proper for him to have at the jail;
one night watchman, at a salary of thirty-five dollars per
month, without board, and one cook, at a salary of eight dol-
lars per month, with board.

 
 

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the three persons so appointed
by the judges aforesaid shall be appointed, one to serve for a
term of two years, one to serve for a term of four years and
one to serve for a term of six years, and any vacancy among
said appointees shall be filled by said judges for the balance
of the unexpired term; and upon the expiration of any of said
terms the said judges shall appoint a successor to serve for a
term of six years; said visitors to serve without pay.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the said visitors shall have
charge, control, supervision and regulation of the Anne
Arundel County Jail, and shall also have supervision over
those persons committed to said jail, and shall have power to
pass all necessary rules and regulations for their own govern-
ment and the government of the jail and the persons confined
therein.

Powers of visi-
tors.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That the said physician, warden
and watchman shall each qualify by taking the usual oath
before the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel
County, and the said warden and watchman shall each give
bond to the State of Maryland in the penalty of one thousand
dollars conditional for the faithful performance of the duties,
which bond shall be approved by the said visitors and filed
with the County Commissioners of said county and recorded
as other bonds are recorded.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of the
warden of said jail, under the direction of said visitors, to take
charge of the prison and prisoners therein and exercise during
his continuance in office the same power and be subject to the
same forfeitures and be responsible for escapes in the same
manner and to the same extent as sheriffs of the several coun-
ties and the Sheriff of Anne Arundel County, and shall per-
form such other duties as may be assigned to him by said
visitors.

Warden's
duties.

SEC. 7. And be it enacted. That all commitments of persons
to said jail shall be directed to the warden of said jail, whose
duty it shall be to receive the prisoners from the officers hav-
ing them in charge; but prisoners shall be carried to and from
said jail to court or elsewhere by the Sheriff of Anne Arundel
