1831.

Sec. 11 . And be it enacted, That the president and direct-
ore of said company, or a majority of them, may appoint or
employ on behalf of said company, all such officers, agents
and servants as they may deem necessary for the transac-
tion of its business, and may remove or discharge any of
them at iheir pleasure, may regulate by contract, and allow
the compensation or wages of such officers, agents or serv-
ants, and may determine by their by-laws, the manner of
adjusting and settling all accounts against the said company,
and they, or a majority of them, shall have power to pass
all by-laws which they may deem necessary, or proper for
the exercise of the powers vested in the said company, or
for carrying into effect the object of this act; Provided;
they be not repugnant to the constitution and laws of the
United States, or of this state.

CHAP. 59.

Powers of direc-
tors.

Sec. 12. And be it enacted, That the objects for which
said company is incorporated, are, and are hereby declared
to be, to promote the safe, speedy, and economical trans-
portation of every species of merchandise, produce, or other
property, between the city of Baltimore and the town of
Wheeling in the state of Virginia; through the counties of
Frederick, and Washington, and the town of Cumberland
in Allegany county in Maryland, and that the president and
directors of said company, or a majority of them, or any
agent duly authorised by them, may contract on behalf of
said company for the transportation, as aforesaid, by or on
account of said company, of every species of merchandise,
produce or other property, between said places, or between
either of said places and any intermediate place, and may
either transport the same in the wagons or other vehicles
belonging to said company, or may contract on behalf of
said company for the transportation of the same, or any part
thereof, with any other company, or with individuals, for
the whole or any part of the said route.

Sec. 13. And be it enacted, That the president and direct-
ors of said company, or a majority of them, or their agents
duly authorised for that purpose, may purchase with the
funds of the said company, any wagons or other vehicles,
any horses or other beasts of burden, and all things which
they may deem necessary or proper to equip or furnish the
same, or may contract on behalf of said company for the
purchase of the same, and may employ them on behalf of
said company in the transportation of merchandise, produce
or other property, along any part of said route, and may
also, on behalf and with the funds of said company, provide
the necessary stabling therefor, either by contract for the
keeping of their teams, or by leasing or purchasing stables,
