1831.

No. 76.

 

Resolution in favor of Samuel Graham.

Passed Mar.10, 1832

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the

 

levy court of Anne Arundel court, be and they are hereby

 

directed to levy such a sum on said county, as the county

 

court may estimate to be the value of a slave of Samuel

 

Graham, of said county, convicted of burglary, and sen-

 

tenced to the penitentiary as a freeman, by the name Josh

 

Williams, and the said sum is hereby directed to be paid by

 

the collector of the tax of Anne Arundel county, to the

 

said Samuel Graham.

 

Further resolved, That the governor, be and he is hereby

 

authorised and requested to order, by such agent as he may

 

appoint, the sale of said negro, requiring of the purchaser

 

bond with security, that the said negro shall be transported

 

out of the state, and directing said agent to pay to the col-

 

lector of the taxes of Anne Arundel county, such sum as

 

may be raised on the sale of said negro: Provided however,

 

that these resolutions shall have no effect, until by verdict

 

of a jury, summoned under the direction of Anne Arundel

 

county court, and the judgment of said court, or of the

 

court of appeals, as hereinafter mentioned, on a case to be

 

stated and docketed between said Graham and said negro,

 

by or under direction of said county court, and to be tried

 

as cases of petition for freedom are triable, the said negro

 

shall be determined to be the slave, for lire, of said Gra-

 

ham, the said county court assigning counsel for such negro

 

for such trial; and either party, by his counsel, may appeal

 

from the judgment of the county court within thirty days

 

thereafter, to the court of appeals; which court shall, al

 

the first term thereof, to which the case shall be transmit-

 

ted, adjudge and determine the same.

Resolution in favour of James Bluer, a Soldier of the Re-

Passed Mar.10,1832

volutionary War.

 

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the

 

treasurer of the western shore, pay to James Bluer, of Fre-

 

derick county, or to his order, during life, in quarter yearly

 

payments, a sum of money equal to the half pay of a private,
in consideration of the services rendered by him during the

 

revolutionary war.
