CHAPTER 8.

CHAPTER 8.

An act to erect a new Bridge over Great Choptank River, at
Greensborough, in Caroline county

Passed Jan. 13, 1832

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Ma-
ryland, That George Reid, John Boon, Thomas Burche-
nal, William Turner and George W. Harrington, be and
they are hereby appointed commissioners for the purpose
of building and completing a new bridge over Great Chop-
tank river, at the place where the old bridge now stands,
and the said commissioners, or a majority of them, are by

this act empowered to agree and contract with any person
or persons, upon the best and cheapest terms, to finish and
complete the said new bridge.

To contract.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the levy court of Caro-
line county, be and they are hereby authorised and directed,
at any time when the said commissioners deem it expedient,
and not before, to assess and levy, on the assessable pro-
perty in said county, a sum not exceeding five hundred dol-
lars current money, together with the usual commission for
collection, to be collected by the collector of said county,
in the same manner as other county charges are collected,
and when collected by the said collector, to be paid to the
said commissioners, or a majority of them, or to their or-
der, and the said bridge, when completed, shall be kept up
and repaired in the same manner that other public bridges
in said county are by law directed to bo kept up and re-
paired.

Levy ordered.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That in case any vacancy shall
happen among the said commissioners, the remaining com-
missioners shall have power to fill up such vacancy until
the said bridge be finished.

Sec. 4, And be it enacted, That the said commissioners,
or a majority of them, after the said bridge is finished, shall
render to the justices of the levy court a full and fair ac-

count of the expenditures of the said sum of money, and
if any surplus of money shall remain in the hands of the
said commissioners, or any of them, they shall pay over the
same to the justices of the levy court, which shall be ap-
plied towards defraying the public charge of said county.

Sec. 5. And be it enacted, That the said commissioners
are hereby empowered and directed to make sale of the
materials of the old bridge on the best terms they possibly
can, and make return of the proceeds thereof to the jus-
tices of the levy court, and the same shall be applied to-
wards defraying the county charges.
