CHAPTER 139.

Passed Feb 21 ,

An additional Act relating to the City of Baltimore.

Extension of
limits of taxa-
tion.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the governor, by and with the advice
and consent of the council, shall appoint, whenever applied
to for that purpose by the mayor and city council of Bal-
timore, three commissioners, who shall extend the limits
of direct taxation within the said city, so far as the same is
settled, built or improved, and in which the usual regula-
tions for watching and lighting or cleansing the streets are
or ought to be applied, and the said mayor and city coun-
cil of Baltimore shall have full power to assess, levy and
collect, any direct tax within such limits, when so ascer-

tained and extended; Provided, that the commissioners
who may be appointed as aforesaid, shall be disinterested
persons, and non-residents of the city of Baltimore, and not
holders of property therein.

Ordinances.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That from and after the pas-
sage of this act, the mayor and city council of Baltimore,
shall be, and they are hereby empowered, to pass all ordi-
nances which they may deem necessary to carry into ef-
fect, and not inconsistent with, the provisions of the pre-
ceding section.

Taxation limit-
ed.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That the power of tax-
ation by the mayor and city council of Baltimore, be and
the same is hereby limited; and it shall not he lawful for
the said mayor and city council to impose and raise in any
one year by direct taxation, a sum exceeding one hundred
and twenty thousand dollars, or impose and raise in any
one year from direct taxation, and all other sources of tax-
ation, a sum exceeding two hundred and twenty thousand
dollars.

' Sec 4. And be it enacted, That the debts which the
mayor and city council of Baltimore may contract on be-
half of said city, shall not, in the aggregate, at any time
exceed the sum of one million of dollars, including as a part
of said sum whatsoever amount the said city may now owe.
Sec 5. And be it enacted. That all acts, or part of acts,
inconsistent with, or contrary to the provisions of this act.
