80 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Jan. 23,

FRIDAY, January 23rd, 1874.
The Senate met.
Prayer by the Rev. Mr. Hedges.
Present at roll-call the following Senators :

Messrs. President, Aydelotte, Blake, Brewer, Billingsley,
Brattan, Crawford, Claggett, Davis, Earle, Fields, Getty,
Knight, Longwell, Mudd, McCulloh, Phelps, Stevens,
Steiner, Spencer, Suit, Tuck, Walsh—23.

The proceedings of yesterday was read and approved.

Mr. Longwell presented the petition of Nathan Haines, of
Baltimore city, praying the passage of a law refunding to
him a certain sum of money erroneously paid by him into the
State Treasury,

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Finance.

Mr. Blake, presented the petition of Susan North, widow
of Edward North, Ann Curtain, widow of Wm. Curtain,
Elzabeth A. Peck, widow of Jacob Peck, asking to be placed
on the pension rolls,

Which were severally read and referred to the Committed
on Pensions.

On motion by Mr. Blake,

Leave was granted to the Committee on Judicial proceed-
ings, to report a bill to add to Article LXIV., section 5 of the
Public General Laws, entitled Mortgages."

On motion by Mr. McCulloh,

Leave was granted to Messrs. McCulloh, Lloyd and Walsh,
to report a bill entitled "a supplement to the Act passed
January Session 1872, chapter 65 to provide for the building
of a new Jail in Cumberland, Allegany county."

On motion by Mr. Suit, it was

Ordered, That the Committee on Pensions, inquire into the
propriety of granting a pension to Wm. D. Claggett of
Prince George's county, a soldier in the war of 1812.
