WEDNESDAY, January 2lst, 1874.
The Senate met.
Prayer by the Rev. W. H. D. Harper.

Present at roll-call the following Senators :

Messrs. President, Aydelotte, Blake, Brewer, Billingsley,
Brattan, Crawford, Davis, Denson, Earle, Fields, Getty,
Knight, Longwell, Lloyd, Mudd, McCulloh, Phelps, Stevens,
Steiner, Spencer, Suit, Tuck, Walsh—24.

On motion by Mr. Fields,
The reading of the Journal was dispensed with.

The hour of 12 o'clock having arrived, the Senate proceed-
ed to the House of Delegates, to enter into an election of
United States Senator.

JOINT CONVENTION.

The hour of 12 o'clock, meridian, having arrived, in accor-
dance with the message sent to the Senate, and in conformity
with the Act of Congress, approved 25th July, 1866, entitled
"An Act to regulate the times and manner of holding elec-
tions for United States Senators in Congress,'' the Senators
appeared in the Hall of the House of Delegates.

Whereupon the members of both Houses convened in Joint
Assembly, and the Journal of each House was read, and it
appeared that the Hon. Wm. Pinkney Whyte had received a
majority of all the votes in each House.

Thereupon, the Chairman declared the Hon. William Pink-
ney Whyte duly elected Senator, to represent the State of
Maryland in the Congress of the United States, for six years
from the 4th of March, 1875.

On motion by Mr. Tuck,
The Joint Convention adjourned.

The Senators returned, and resumed the consideration of
Legislative business.

Mr. Fields moved that the vote by which the reading of
the Journal was dispensed with, be reconsidered.
