MONDAY, March 16th, 1874.

The Senate met at 12 o'clock, M.

Prayer by Rev. Father Oberley,

Present at roll call the following Senators :

Messrs. President, Blake, Brewer, Billingsley, Brattan,
Davis, Earle, Fields, Getty, Longwell, Lloyd, McCulloh,
Phelps, Stevens, Steiner, Suit, Williams—17.

The proceedings of Friday were read and approved.

Mr. Earle presented the memorial of P. P. Pendleton and
other merchants of Baltimore, with reference to the proposed
ship canal connecting the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Internal
Improvements.

Mr. Brattan presented the petition of J. A. Horn and fifty
other citizens and taxpayers of the town of Crisfield, protest-
ing against the repeal of the charter of said town.

Which was read and referred to Messrs. Brattan, Tuck and
Steiner.

Mr. Suit presented the petition of B. F. Duvall and others,
citizens of Prince George's county, praying the repeal of sec-
tion 5 of chapter 381 of the Acts of 1872, offering a reward
for the destruction of hawks and owls, so far as the same
applies to Prince George's county, for the reason that more
than three thousand dollars have been levied during the past
year for the destruction of such birds, which they believe
have been mostly killed in other counties.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Judicial
Proceedings.

Mr. Billingsley presented the following communication :

To the Honorable

The General Assembly of Maryland :

The undersigned would most respectfully represent that,
the State Normal School, now held in a hired house in the
city of Baltimore, is regarded by school men as the centre of
free public education, so long and so liberally cherished by
Maryland.
