CHAPTER 76.

AN ACT to locate the county seat of Garrett,

county.

WHEREAS, An act was passed by the General As-

sembly of Maryland, at the January session, eighteen
hundred and seventy-two, providing for the erection

of a new county out of a portion of Allegany county,

and —

WHEREAS, At an election held under the provi-

sions of said act of the Assembly, the qualified voters

in that portion of Allegany county, now embraced

within the lines of Garrett county, did designate their

choice for the county seat as required by the second

section of said act, and —

WHEREAS, The town of Oakland received more

votes for the county seat than any of the points voted

for, and —

WHEREAS, If this General Assembly should pass

an act authorizing the holding of another election for

the purpose of locating the county seat it is not likely
that any one of the points which were voted for would

receive a majority of the whole vote; therefore, in

order to prevent unnecessary taxation and to stimu-

late the prosperity and material growth of the new

county.

County seat

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of

Maryland, That the town of Oakland, be, and the

same is hereby declared the county seat of Garrett

county.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take

effect from the date of its passage.
