The Clerk of the House of Delegates appeared and de-
livered the following message :

BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES,

February 4th, 1874.
Gentlemen of the Senate

We propose, with the concurrence of your Honorable Body,
to go into a Joint Convention immediately for the election of
a Governor of this State, to fill the vacancy occasioned by
the resignation of the Hon. Wm. Pinkney Whyte, Governor
of this State, now on file in the office of the Secretary of State,
and to take effect on the 4th of March next.

MILTON Y. KIDD,

Chief Clerk.

Mr. Stevens submitted the following message to the House
of Delegates:

BY THE SENATE,

February 4th, 1874.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:

We have received your message proposing to go into Joint
Convention to elect Governor, and respectfully concur therein.

By order,

AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,

Secretary.

Which was read, assented to, and sent to the House of
Delegates.

JOINT CONVENTION.

At one o'clock, P. M., the Senators of Maryland, accom-
panied by their Secretary, appeared in the House of Dele-
gated.

Whereupon, the Speaker of the House of Delegates, as
Chairman of the Joint Convention, announced that in con-
formity with the provisions of the Constitution, Article II,
Sections 4 and 6, and by agreement between the two Houses,
the Joint Convention would now proceed to elect, by a viva
voce vote of each member of the General Assembly present,
a person to the office of Governor, to fill the unexpired term
of the Hon. William Pinkney Whyte.

The Secretary of the Senate then proceeded to call the roll
of Senators.
