86 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Jan. 21,

EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT,

Annapolis, January 20th, 1874.

Gentlemen of the House of Delegates of Maryland:

I herewith transmit to you the Report of the Trustees of
the Maryland Inebriate Asylum for 1873.

WM. PINKNEY WHTTE.

REPORT.

To His Excellency, the Governer of Maryland:

The Trustees of the Maryland Inebriate Asylum have
the honor to present to you the following Report:

On the first day of January, 1873, the number of
inmates of the Asylum was.................................. 6

Admitted since...................................................... 80

Total................................................ 86

Number from Maryland.......................................63

From other States.............................................23

—— 86

Of this number, nine were readmitted, and two of them
twice. Had these been counted on the usual basis of insti-
tution statistics, our record would have shown ninety-five
as the total of inmates, but no single individual is counted
more than once, that the public mind may not be misled as
to the actual number of individuals who have sought our
protection and care.

Beneficiaries.—Under this head are included those who
had no means of support, and those who, when they entered
the Institution, expressed their intention of making some
remuneration, but failed to do so. Of the former class, there
were twelve, of the latter, ten, making a total of twenty-two,
or twenty-five and three-fifths per centum of actual bene-
ficiaries.

Average age—Thirty-seven years.

Years of Excess.—The number of years during which each
inmate has indulged in the use of intoxicants, has, of course,
varied according to age and condition; but the average period
of excess for each is, at least, seven and a-half years, mak-
ing a total of six hundred and forty-five years, passed by
eighty-six persons, of the average age of thirty-seven years,
in habits of excessive indulgence.
