Mr. Foster submitted the following order:

Ordered, That the thanks of this House be tendered to the
Hon. Greenbury M. Watkins, for the able and dignified
manner in which he has discharged the duties of temporary
Chairman of the House.

The Secretary of the Senate delivered the following mes-
sage:

BY THE SENATE,

January 8th, 1874.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :

The Senate has organized by the election of, Hon. John
Lee Carroll, President, and the appointment of Augustus
Gassaway, Esq., Secretary. We are now ready to proceed
with the business of the session, and propose, with the con-
currence of your Honorable Body, the appointment of a Joint
Committee of three members, to wait upon the Governor
and inform him that the Legislature is prepared to receive
any communication he may be pleased to make.

We have appointed upon the part of the Senate, Messrs.
Walsh, Longwell and Earle.

Secretary.

Gentlemen of the Senate :

Speaker, and the appointment of Milton Y. Kidd, Esq., as
Chief Clerk. We are now ready to proceed with the busi-
