1833.

step, and running thence easterly on said main street twen-
ty feet, to John S. Murry's ground, thence southerly, binding
on Murry's ground, one hundred and eighty five feet more
or Jess, to a corner store, thence south easterly, thirty-five
feet more or less, to the south west corner of an alley here-
tofore laid out by Jacob Shurman, thence westerly, paral-
lel with the main street of Westminster, twenty feet; thence
north easterly parallel with the third course hereof to a
point westwardly twenty feet from the beginning of said
third course, and thence northerly parallel with the second
course hereof one hundred and eighty-five feet more or less,
to the place of beginning, they or a majority of them are
hereby authorised and empowered to open and extend said
twenty feet alley.

CHAP. 53

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That before the said commis-
sioners, or a majority of them proceed to the discharge of
the duties herein directed, they shall give public notice to
all persons concerned, by advertising their intention, to meet
on the ground, in the newspaper, styled the "Carrollto-
nian, " published in Westminster, and be duly qualified ac-
cording to law.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That if in the opinion of the
said commissioners, or a majority of them, the public con-
venience would thereby be promoted by opening and ex-
tending said alley, that then they shall award what damages
(if any) and to whom payable; they shall also apportion
the said damages, and the cost of opening said alley among
the property holders according to the benefit of opening
said alley to them or any of them.

Sec. 4. And be it enacted, That this act shall be inope-
rative until the damages and cost of opening said alley shall
have been first paid.

To be first paid

Sec. 5. And be it enacted, That the said commissioners
shall be entitled to a reasonable compensation for their
services, not ex needing two dollars each, per day.
