Treasurer for the uses of the said town, and he shall not pay
|

any money out of the treasury of said town, except on the order
|
 
|
of the Commissioners. He shall give bond to the Commis-
|
 
|
sioners in the sum of eight thousand dollars, and take the oath,
|
 
|
required by this Charter, before he assumes any of the duties
|
 
|
of, or begins to act as Town Clerk and Treasurer. His salary
|
 
|
or compensation shall be fixed by the Commissioners at the time
|

of his appointment. If any person, who has been elected Town
|
 
|
Clerk and Treasurer, shall fail to qualify and give an approved
|
 
|
bond within fifteen days after his election, his office shall be de-
|
 
|
clared vacant, and someone else appointed to fill the vacancy.

Bailiff and

57. The Commissioners shall appoint a bailiff, who shall
|

serve for two years and until his successor is elected and quali-
|
 
|
fied, unless sooner discharged for cause. The salary of the
|
 
|
bailiff shall be fixed at the time of his appointment, but it shall
|
 
|
not exceed fifty dollars per month. The Commissioners may
|
 
|
appoint as many regular policemen as necessary, not to exceed
|
 
|
three, for the safety of persons and property within the cor-
|
 
|
porate limits of Cambridge. The compensation of said police-
|
 
|
men not to exceed forty dollars each per month, and the time
|
 
|
or times of their service shall be fixed at the time of their ap-
|
 
|
pointment. Special policemen may also be appointed, if neces-
|
 
|
sity require it, but no special policemen shall be appointed for
|
 
|
a longer period than forty-eight hours, nor shall any special
|
 
|
policeman be continuously appointed so as to render him a regu-
|
 
|
lar policeman. When this Charter, an ordinance or an order
|
 
|
of the Commissioners, names the bailiff to do an act, said act
|
 
|
may be performed by any policeman, if he is directed to per-
|
 
|
form it by the bailiff, the Mayor or any Commissioner. The
|
 
|
bailiff and the policemen shall be entitled to charge the same
|
 
|
fees as constables are now, or may hereafter be entitled to
|
 
|
charge. The bailiff and the policemen aforesaid are hereby declared
|
 
|
to be clothed with all the powers, authority and prerogatives which

the Town Clerk, said advertisement shall state the time of said

examination and the requirements for policemen. Every appli-
|

cant must be of good moral character, not addicted to the use
|
 
|
of alcoholic liquors or drink in any form, must be at least five
|
 
|
feet eight inches in height, must weigh not less than one hun-
|
 
|
dred and sixty pounds nor more than two hundred and seventy-
|
 
|
five pounds, must be between the ages of twenty-one and forty-
|
 
|
six years, must be able to read and write a legible hand, and
|
 
|
must show a good knowledge of the ordinances of Cambridge.

|
The examination as to the knowledge of the ordinances of
|
 
|
