        On motion of Mr. John Leeds Kerr,
            The said six certificates were ordered to be on the table.
        On motion of Mr. John P. Kennedy,
            The President appointed Messrs. John P. Kennedy, James M.
Coale and David Hoffman, a committee to prepare and report a
Form of Certificate to authenticate the votes of the Electors, in conformity
with the requirements of the Constitution and Laws of the United States.
            Mr. John P. Kennedy, from the said committee, submitted the following
form of Certificate; which was read and adopted:

            To the Honorable, the President of the Senate of the United States of
America.
                We, the undersigned, duly elected Electors of President and
Vice President of the United States of America in and for the State
of Maryland, as will fully appear by reference to the annexed document,
being the certificate furnished by the Executive Authority of
the State of Maryland, do hereby certify that on the First Wednesday in
December in the year one Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty, we met at
the City of Annapolis, in said State, being the place where by the Laws of
the State of Maryland, the Electors of President and Vice President of
the United States, on the part of said State, are directed to meet to
perform the trust reposed in them; and that, then and there, having
duly organized and qualified, William Henry Harrison, of the State of
Ohio, was put in nomination for President of the United States of
America, for the four years from and after the Third day of March
next ensuing; and John Tyler, of the State of Virginia, was put in nomination
for Vice President of the United States of America for the
four years from and after the Third day of March next ensuing; that
we then and there, in pursuance of the Constitution and Laws of the United
States, proceeded to vote, by ballots, for President of the United States
of America, and, upon counting the ballots, it was ascertained that
William Henry Harrison, of the State of Ohio, received Ten votes for President
of the United States of America:  That we then proceeded to vote

in such event it would have been the duty of the Electors to prepare and
certify six instead of three Electoral Certificates.
                This note is made, with great deference, by the Secretary, with
the view of saving trouble and confusion hereafter; the Electors being from
the nature of their duties, the limited time allowed them, and other circumstances,
much hurried in discharging them.
