66. 1836. George Howard Esquire was elected President, and Jos. H. Nicholson, Secretary. On motion of Mr. Ricaud, the following order was read and adopted: Ordered that Mr. Andrew Slicer be appointed Messenger, and Mr. Samuel Peace, Door Keeper to this College. On motion of Mr. Bowie, the following order was read and adopted: Ordered that a committee to consist of five Electors be appointed by the chair to prepare and report the Form of certificates to be signed by the Members of the College to authenticate the vote of the State of Maryland for President and Vice President of the United States. Accordingly, the following Electors were appointed the said Committee, towit: Messrs. Bowie, Ricaud, Coale, Hoffman and Burchenal. On motion of Mr. Brown, it was ordered that the committee appointed to prepare a Form of Certificates be directed also to enquire with the necessity of qualification by the Electors, before proceeding to the Election of President and Vice President of the United States. Mr. Bowie from the said Committee reported the following resolution, which was read and adopted. Resolved, that it is expedient that the Electors should qualify before they proved to discharge the trust reposed in them. Accordingly, the Electors present, severally qualified by taking the oath prescribed by the Constitution and Laws, and by declaring this belief in the Christian Religion. The President laid before the Electors the three certificates required by law to be delivered to the Electors by the Executive Authority of the State, which were read and ordered to be on the table. John S. Purnell Esquire, who had been duly proclaimed by the Executive Authority of the State, elected one of the Electors of President and Vice President of the United States, in and for the State of Maryland, not having appeared in the Senate chamber, and the hour of 4 o'clock P. M. having arrived. On motion of Mr. Brown, the following order was read and adopted: Ordered, that we now proceed to file the vacancy existing in this College, agreeably to the Act of Assembly of December Session |
