MI5CELLANIA
Taylor was the first President to be elected
with no previous political experience. Cho-
sen because he was a war hero, he was ill
prepared for politics and the problems re-
lated thereto. He died one year and four
months after he was inaugurated.
Millard Fillmore succeeded Taylor in 1850.
A person of limited ability, he did every-
thing he was directed to do by the leaders of
the Whig Party, yet they refused to nomi-
nate him on his own at the next election. He
accepted the nomination of the anti-Catho-
lic, anti-immigrant American Party-the
Know Nothings-and ran a poor third, car-
rying only the State of Maryland.
