RESOLUTIONS assented to
RESOLVED, That the resolution of the
last session of the legislature, prohibiting the treasurer to pay
any interest on certificates issued by this state that
were subscribable under the act of congress making
provision for the debt of the United States, be and the same is hereby
so far repealed as to admit the
treasurer to pay the interest now due on such certificates that have not
been subscribed, out of any
monies arising for interest, paid into the treasury by the purchasers of
confiscated property.
RESOLVED, That it is the opinion of
this general assembly, that William Campbell, the late
agent of this state, has discharged the trust reposed in him by the legislature,
with fidelity, ability,
and advantage to the state.
RESOLVED, That all compromises made
by the said agent with collectors and others, and all such
other acts of the said agent were not strictly warranted
by his powers, and are stated in his report
to this general assembly, be and they are hereby confirmed,
and that the treasurers make their entries
accordingly.
RESOLVED, That in addition to the salary
allowed to the chancellor, as judge of the land-office,
by the act to settle and pay the civil list, and other expences of civil
government, he be allowed
the further sum of one hundred pounds current money, and that the same
be paid out of the
funds appropriated for the payment of the civil list.
RESOLVED, That the treasurer of the
western shore be authorised and directed to purchase a
good bill of exchange, for three hundred pounds sterling, on London, and
payable at thirty days
sight, and that he endorse it to the agent of the bank
stock, or order, on bond, with security being
given to account for the same when required.
RESOLVED, That the governor and council
be and they are hereby authorised and directed to
provide for the necessary repairs being made to the stadt-house for the
accommodation of the judiciary,
and other departments of government, provided that the expence thereof
shall not exceed the
sum of two thousand pounds.
RESOLVED, That the treasurer of the
western shore be and he is hereby directed to preserve any
certificates, or evidences of debts, which, in the hands of individuals,
would be subscribable as part
of this state's quota of the assumed debt, now remaining in the treasury,
or that may be at any time
hereafter paid therein on account of any public demand whatever, and to
lodge the same in the
hands of the trustee of the state, to be by him subscribed for and on account
of the state, if congress
shall, at any time hereafter, extend the time for completing this state's
quota of the assumed
debt.
WHEREAS by a resolve of the last general assembly it
was directed, that no proceedings should
be had against John Taylor and the estate of Alexander Cowan, deceased,
as securities of Archibald
Buchanan, deceased, for a debt due to the state, until the end of this
session of assembly, in order that
decision might be had in a suit in chancery against Thomas Cockey Deye,
to compel the payment of
money for lands purchased by him, and which were sold for the purpose of
discharging the said debt:
And whereas no decree hath yet been made in said suit, and this assembly
thinking it reasonable
that they should be indulged a reasonable time for procuring decision of
the said suit in chancery,
RESOLVED, That all proceedings against the aforesaid John Taylor, and the
estate of Alexander
Cowan, deceased, be suspended until the first day of August next.
WHEREAS it is represented to this general
assembly, by Cornelius Mills, of the city of Annapolis,
that he is desirous of bringing forward the use of a compostition, which
he has obtained in great
perfection, and prays the assistance of the legislature in the prosecution
of the said work; and the
general assembly being willing to promote the same, RESOLVED, That the
treasurer of the western
shore be and he is hereby directed to advance to the said Cornelius Mills
the sum of two hundred
pounds current money, on loan for five years, to enable him to proceed
in the execution of the same,
on he, the said Cornelius Mills, giving bond to the state, with such security
as the said treasurer shall
approve of, for the punctual payment thereof, with the interest thereon
annually. |

A LIST of the LAWS passed last SESSION.
AN ACT to continue certain causes in the high court of
appeals.
An ACT to settle and ascertain the salary of members
of the council for the ensuing year.
An ACT to lay a further tax on Cæcil county, to
complete the court-house, prison and prison-yard,
at Elkton.
An ACT to authorise the commissioners for building a
court-house at Easton in Talbot county,
to sell and dispose of the old court-house, and for
other purposes therein mentioned.
An ACT for the benefit of the vestry of Saint-James's
parish, in Baltimore county.
An ACT to appoint commissioners to sell and dispose of
certain lands belonging to Stepney
parish, in Somerset county, and to apply the money arising
from the sales thereof.
An ACT to enable the justices of Saint-Mary's county
to assess a sum of money on the said
county for the support of James Mills, son of John,
of the said county.
An ACT for erecting a village at Choptank Bridge, in
Caroline county, and for other purposes
therein mentioned.
An ACT to revive and aid the proceedings of Harford county
court, and for other purposes.
An additional supplement to an act, entitled, An act
to provide for the appointment of commissioners
for the regulation and improvement of Easton, in Talbot
county, and to establish and
regulate a market at the said town. |
