CHAP. XX.
A Supplement to the act, entitled, An act appointing wardens for
the port of Baltimore-town, in Baltimore county. |
Preamble. |
WHEREAS it is represented by a number of the merchants
of Baltimore-town,
that many useful regulations have taken place in consequence
of the powers heretofore granted to the wardens of the port
of Baltimore, but that difficulties arise in carrying them into full
effect for want
of the said powers being enlarged, especially with regard to mooring
and stationing
vessels arriving in the said harbour; |
Wardens to
make rules,
&c. |
II. Be it enacted,
by
the General Assembly of Maryland, That the wardens
of the port of Baltimore shall have full power and authority to make
such rules,
regulations and ordinances, from time to time, respecting the mooring
and safe
stationing all vessels arriving in the port of Baltimore, as they or
a majority of
them shall think necessary. |
And levy
two-pence
per tun, &c. |
III. And, to
enable them to carry the said rules, regulations and ordinances,
in full effect, Be it enacted,
That the wardens of the said port of Baltimore
shall have full power and authority to assess, levy and collect, on
every vessel arriving
at the said port of Baltimore, except pilot boats, and vessels not
coming
from sea, belonging to citizens of this state, a sum of money not exceeding
two-pence
current money per tun, to be appropriated and applied by the said board
of wardens to carry into effect the rules, regulations and ordinances,
that shall
and may be adopted in consequence of the powers vested in them in virtue
of this
present act; provided always, that no rules, regulations and ordinances,
directed
to be made by this act, be repugnant to the laws of this government, and
provided
said rules, regulations and ordinances, be published from time to time
in
the Baltimore news-papers. |

CHAP. XXI.
An ACT for the relief of
William Paddison, and Sarah his wife. |
Preamble. |
WHEREAS William Paddison, and Sarah his wife, of
Dorchester
county, by their petition to this general assembly, set forth, that the
said William Paddison was formerly married to Anne Sherwood, who
is since dead, sister to Sarah the petitioner; that in the month of November
last,
the petitioners, being ignorant of the law which prohibits a man to marry
his
wife's sister) were married, and have since been informed, that the said
marriage
is void, and they liable to pay a very heavy sum, and prayed that an act
might
pass declaring their said marriage to be valid, and relieving them from
any penalty
they may have incurred by disobeying the act concerning marriages; and
this
general assembly, influenced by the circumstances of the said petitioners,
are disposed
to grant the prayer of the said petition: |
Marriage declared
good,
&c. |
II. Be it enacted,
by
the General Assembly of Maryland, That the said marriage,
had and celebrated between the said William Paddison and Sarah the petitioners,
shall be and is hereby declared to be good, valid and effectual, to all
intents
and purposes whatsoever, and that any issue of the said marriage shall
be,
and they are hereby declared to be, legitimate, in the same manner
as if the said
marriage had not been contrary to law; and the said petitioners shall be
and they
are hereby relieved and discharged from all the pains and penalties inflicted
by the
aforesaid act on persons intermarrying contrary thereto, any thing in the
said act,
or any other law, usage or custom, to the contrary notwithstanding. |

ACT for the benefit of Mary Cox, of Baltimore-town. |
Preamble. |
WHEREAS James Cox, late a major in the Baltimore-town
militia,
fell in the cause of American freedom in the action of German-town:
And whereas he left a widow and children unprovided for: |
