WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of
Thomas Canfield, that he entered into the service of the United States by enlisting
as a private soldier in the fourth Maryland regiment, then commanded by
colonel Steward, in the year seventeen hundred and eighty-one, and continued
to serve in the Maryland line for more than two years, and until the end of the
war; that he was employed as a labourer to the workmen on the stadt-house;
that early in the morning of the twelfth November last, he ascended the scaffold
of the stadt-house to the roof thereof with a load of shingles, when his foot
unfortunately slipped, from the fright of which, and not having it in his power
to lay hold of any thing for his safety, he fell from the roof of the stadt-house
to the ground, at least eighty feet, whereby he was so much bruised, and received
so many contusions, that he was carried home senseless, where he continued several
weeks, not expected to live; that he is in a languishing condition, and totally
deprived of earning any kind of support for himself, his wife and two helpless
children, who were dependent on him for their bread from his daily labour;
RESOLVED, That the justices of Anne-Arundel county orphans court, are hereby
authorised and empowered to make the same allowance to Thomas Canfield
as maimed and disabled soldiers are allowed, while he continues unable to support
himself by labour.

    WHEREAS it appears, by the petition of Thomason Alexander, relict of Ely
Alexander, late of Cæcil county, deceased, that the said Thomason and her numerous
family are likely to be left destitute of property in consequence of her late
husband becoming security to the state in the sum of one hundred and sixty-six
pounds thirteen shillings and four-pence principal, for land bought at the Head
of Elk from the commissioners for the sale of confiscated property, by a certain
Caleb Alexander, who is now under execution for the same, and who has no visible
property, except the land aforesaid, which will not at this time sell for near
the purchase money; from a consideration of the smallness of the sum, and motives
of clemency towards the widow and orphans, RESOLVED, That the attorney-general
be, and he is hereby directed, not to issue any process against the
property left by Ely Alexander aforesaid, until the end of the next session of
assembly.

    RESOLVED, That Matthew Ridley, Esquire, be appointed to attend as
agent, on behalf of this state, before the commissioners nominated to hear and determine
the matter in dispute between this state and Messieurs Nicholas and Jacob
Van Staphorsts, of the city of Amsterdam; and that he shall be allowed
his reasonable expences for such attendance.
 

    ORDERED, That Mr. Frederick Green, printer to this state, bind, as soon
as circumstances may admit, in rough calf, lettered on the back, and executed
in the best manner, and on the most reasonable terms, one hundred copies of the
laws, subject to the disposal of the general assembly, agreeably to the resolve of
January 22, 1785.

(A private act.) An ACT for the relief of John Carmichael and Train Ackworth, of Somerset county, and     for other purposes therein mentioned. A Supplement to the act, entitled, An act for the relief of the poor in the counties of Dorchester     and Somerset. An Act for extending and continuing South-street, in Frederick-town, in Frederick county,     to the Conococheague road.
