LAWS of MARYLAND.
CHAP. XXVI.
An additional supplement to an act to settle and adjust the accounts
of the troops of this state in the service of the United
States, and
for other purposes therein mentioned. |
| Preamble. |
WHEREAS the general assembly, by two acts, the one
passed in October,
seventeen hundred and eighty, the other in May, seventeen hundred
and eighty-one, did establish a general system, by which justice
was intended to be done to the officers and soldiers of the Maryland line;
and it
being the wish and intention of this assembly to make an equitable compensation
to all officers and soldiers belonging to this state, who have served
and adhered to
the cause of America: And whereas, by omission, sundry officers and
soldiers,
who have deserved well from this state, could not, agreeable to the said
laws, receive
certificates for the depreciation of their pay: |

the invalid
corps, &c. |
II. Be it therefore
enacted, by the general assembly of Maryland, That the commissioner
appointed to settle and adjust the accounts of the officers and soldiers
of
this state, be authorised and directed to settle and adjust the accounts
of the officers
and soldiers of the invalid corps, who were raised from citizens of, or
property
belonging to, this state, upon the certificates of the commanding officers,
and to grant certificates for the amount thereof, in the same manner, and
upon
the same principles, as officers and soldiers of the Maryland line were
settled with
agreeable to the acts aforesaid. |

III. And be
it enacted, That the commissioner shall in like manner settle and
adjust the pay and accounts of all officers and soldiers, who were of this
state and
in the service of the United States, who have fallen in battle or died,
and grant
certificates for the amount thereof to their devisees or legal representatives,
or to
such person persons as they may have directed to receive to same. |

IV. And,
whereas troops have been raised in this state in the beginning of the
war, who were afterwards turned over to the continental establishment,
and the
commission being doubtful whether they were entitled to the depreciation
of
their pay while in the particular service of this state; Be
it therefore enacted,
That the commissioner be authorised and directed to settle with, and grant
certificates
to, such officers and soldiers, for the depreciation of their pay, while
in
the particular service of this state, in the same manner, and upon the
same principles,
as if they had been on the continental establishment. |

V. And be it
enacted, That the commissioner, in like manner, be authorised
and directed to settle with, and grant certificates to, lieutenant-colonel
Moses
Rawlings, for the amount of the depreciation of his pay, from the first
day of
January, seventeen hundred and seventy-seven, to the second day of June,
seventeen
hundred and seventy-nine. |
Certificate to
be granted to
col. Marbury. |
VI. And be it
enacted, That the governor and council be requested to direct
the treasurer of the western shore to grant his certificate to colonel
Luke Marbury,
for the depreciation of his accounts and pay, amounting to the sum of twelve
hundred and fifty-eight pounds four shillings and three-pence current money,
agreeable to the act of last session to adjust the debts due from this
state. |

VII. And be
it enacted, That the commissioner aforesaid shall settle the account
of captain Samuel Turbutt Wright, late of the second Maryland regiment,
from the first of January, seventeen hundred and seventy-seven, till the
thirtieth of
May, seventeen hundred and seventy-eight, and grant his certificates for
the amount
thereof. |

be granted to
capt. Read,
&c. |
VIII. And be
it enacted, That the governor and council be requested to direct
the treasurer to grant his certificates to captain John Read, and to the
officers
and men of his company, for the depreciation of their pay, as settled with
the
auditor-general, to the first day of August, seventeen hundred and eighty,
agreeable |
