130 PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY

Indictment aforesaid they first paying their Fees due to the officers of this Court
etc.

Whereupon Came the Said Isaack Williams and William Willson and
Acknowledged themselves Indebted unto our Sovereigne Lord the King in the
Just Sume of tenn pounds of Lawfull money of England apeice to be Leavied
on their goods and Chatties Lands and tenements Respectively for his Majestyes
use if the Said Isaack Williams and William Willson Shall not Appeare at the
next County Court to be held at Charles Towne the fourth Tuesday in March
next And in the meane time to be of good behavour as well towards our
Sovereigne Lord the King as all the good people of this province etc.

[Presentment Entred in June Court last.]

Abigail Clifford have been by the grand Jury twice presented for bearing of
basterd Chilldren and the Said Abigail Clifford being Called Came into Court
and it being demanded of her how She would Acquitt herselfe of the premises
Confesed the facts and Submitted herselfe to the Court: Whereupon the Court
ordered the Sheriffe to take the Said Abigail Clifford to the wipping post and
there give her twenty Six Lashes on her bare back which was Accordingly done,
and then She was Comitted into Costody of the Sheriffe untill She paid her fees.

Ordered that a Subpoena Issue forth for Hugh Ryley to testifie for John
Gardiner at the suite of Abraham Feilds.

Ordered that a Subpoena Issue forth for Richard Marsham to testifie for
Christopher Thompson at the suite of Furguson and Teage.

Ordered that a Subpoena Isue forth for Ninian Beall and John Short to
testifie for George Young at the suite of Edward and Dudly Carleton.

Susanah Grimes Servant woman to Mr. Thomas Hollyday was Sumoned to
Appeare here this Court to Answer unto what Should be Objected against her
for bearing of a basterd Child but She not Appearing was Continued till next
Court.

Margery Burgis Servant woman to John Smith being Sumoned Appeared to
Answer what Should be Objected against her for beareing of a Malatta basterd
Child and it being demanded of her how She Would Acquitt herselfe She
Confesed the fact and that her masters negroe Called Cezar gott the Same Where-
upon it is ordered by the Court here that the Sheriff take the Said Margery
Burgis to the wipping post and there give her twenty Six Lashes on her bare
back which was Accordingly done And further it is ordered the Said Margery
Burgis Serve the Said John Smith one yeare for the disgrace and trouble of his
house in the Same and further it is ordered that a Venire Facias Issue forth
for the Said John Smiths negroe Called Cezar to Appeare the next Court to
Answer etc. And Likewise ordered that the Said John Smith Enter into Recog-
nizance in the Sume of tenn pounds Sterling that he Cause the Said Margery
Burgis and the Said Child to be brought to the vestry as Soone as She Shall be
free from the Said John Smith etc.

Whereupon the Said John Smith in open Court Acknowledged himselfe In-
debted unto his Majesty in the Sume of tenn pounds of good and Lawfull money
of England to be Leavied on his goods and Chatties Lands and tenements for
his Majestys use if Soe be the Said John Smith doe not bring the Said Margery
[117] Burgis or Cause her to be brought as Soone as She Shall be free from the
