CLERKS OF COUNTIES

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.

    The boundaries and numbers of election districts altered
by this act, to be delivered by the commissioners
to the county clerks, and recorded by them,
—County clerks to return to the levy courts a list
of fines recovered by virtue of this act,
    Books to be kept by the county clerks for entering
the choice of warehouses by the levy courts,
    County clerks to record the bonds of inspectors of
tobacco,
—To record the proceedings of the levy courts, and
attend them on all occasions relative to this act,
—Manifests of tobacco delivered over by the old to
the new inspectors to be lodged with them,
    Judgments to be entered by confession or non sum informatus
by the direction of a judge out of court,
    County courts directed, under the penalty of 50 dollars,
to make out in the month of November yearly,
two copies of the levy list allowed by the levy courts,
one copy to be sent to the senate, and one to the house
of delegates,
    The public papers of Notaries, on their death, &c. to
be lodged with the county clerks, who may sue for the
same,
    The clerks of the several counties directed to make
payment of monies due for fines, licenses, &c.
—If necessary, the governor and council may direct
suits, and may give credit for money not chargeable by
law,
    Nothing contained in the act for the trial of facts,
&c. and changing the constitution, to authorise the
removal of county clerks,
    Temporary powers vested in the county clerks, to
issue process, as before the change of the late judiciary
system, returnable in the same manner,
—Their duties to be discharged in the same manner
until further provision,
—Deeds, &c. received by the several clerks within the
limited time, since the passage of the act of 1804, ch.
55, or that should be received, (until further provision,)
to be recorded, and to be valid as those recorded before,
    Oaths of the judges to be recorded,
    Transcripts of deeds, &c. to be transmitted to the
clerk of the court of appeals,

    Directions for the issuing of process and the execution
of duties as before,

    Duties of county clerks as to certificates to be given
to free negroes,
—Penalty on their knowingly granting them to negroes
not entitled to freedom, or to free negroes, unless
belonging to the state, or manumitted in their counties,
—Compensation allowed to the clerks,
    County clerks to record the appointments of judges of
elections, and make out warrants and deliver them to
the sheriffs,
    The books of the polls of all the election districts,
with a certificate of the votes, to be lodged by the
judges with the county clerks, who are to forward a
copy of the certificate to the governor and council
within five days,
—The day of receiving the certificate and polls to
be noted,
—Compensation, to be levied and paid by the county,
    The bonds of trustees, in cases of insolvent debtors,
to be recorded in the several counties,
—Proceedings under this act to be recorded by the
county clerks,
—The clerks fees to be paid at the time of the discharge,
