An Act for the relief of Thomas Duvall, of Prince-George's County.

                                    CHAP. CXXIX.
An Act authorising Commissioners to purchase a Fire-Engine for the
    use of the Inhabitants of William's Port, in Washington County.

Passed Feb. 5, 1818.
    1.  BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That 
Jacob T. Towson, Michael A. Finley, Edmund H. Turner, William
H. Van Lear and Michael G. Kessinger, be and they hereby
are appointed commissioners to procure and purchase a fire-engine
for the use of the inhabitants of William's Port, in Washington
county, and also to procure by purchase, or otherwise, a suitable
house in which the said engine shall be kept.

purchased.
    2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the commissioners aforesaid shall
procure a copy of the latest assessments which has been made of
the houses and other buildings in the said town, and shall be guided
by the same in affixing the proportionate sum which each owner
of property aforesaid shall pay towards the sum hereinafter mentioned,
and if any buildings have been erected in the said town
since the last assessment they shall be valued by any three disinterested
men of the county, not residents of the said town, appointed
by the commissioners, who shall act under oath, and shall be
guided in their valuation by the relative value which said property
may bear to other property in said town by the assessment list
aforesaid.

    3.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the commissioners aforesaid shall
cause a copy of the assessment, when completed, to be returned
under their hands and seals to the collector of the taxes for said
county, who is hereby authoirsed and required to collect the same,
in the same manner, and at the same time, as other county taxes
are collected, and shall pay over the money so as aforesaid collected,
after deducting the usual commission, unto the commissioners
aforesaid, or to their order.

    4.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the sum to be raised by the commissioners
aforesaid, shall not exceed the sum of twelve hundred
dollars, and any balance that may remain on hand after purchasing
the fire-engine, and procuring the house aforesaid, shall be laid
out in the purchase of fire-ladders, hooks, buckets, or other articles
necessary for a fire-company.

    5.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said commissioners shall have
power to borrow such sum or sums of money as may be necessary
to carry this act into effect, at a rate of interest not exceeding six
per centum per annum, and a majority of the commissioners aforesaid
shall have full power and authority to carry all the provisions
of this act into effect.

    6.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That when the citizens of said town, or
any thirty of them, shall associate themselves together for the purpose
of forming a company to be called " The William's-Port Fire
Company," and shall adopt a constitution, and lodge a copy of the
