thereof, the sum of seventy-five dollars each, in lieu of the
license fee heretofore received from inspectors by them appointed.

CHAP. 114.

    4.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said inspector, or his deputy,
shall see that all fish, offered for inspection, shall have been well
struck with salt or pickle in the first instance, and preserved sweet
and free from rust, taint or damage; and all such fish as are or may
be cured as aforesaid, and of a good and fat quality, with sweet
pickle in the barrels, and sufficient salt to preserve them, shall be
branded herrings (or other fish as the case may be,) No. 1; those
which are not as good, though sound and free from taint, shall be
branded No. 2; and such as are not sound or very materially tainted
and damaged, shall be condemned and marked with a broad arrow
on the bilge of the barrel, half barrel or tierce, as the case may
be.

    By ch. 170, the inspectors and their deputies are to brand their names, and the
name of the place on each barrel of fish by them inspected, and keep an account,
&c.  See 1818, ch. 99.

    5.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That when any fish are or shall be
brought to the city of Baltimore, the owners or importers, or their
agents, shall within forty-eight hours after the landing of the same,
deliver to the inspector, or his deputy, a written report, containing
the number and kinds of casks of fish, and the place or places
where they may be deposited, so that the same may be inspected,
under the penalty of one dollar for each and every cask imported
and neglected to be reported as aforesaid.

    6.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That when the inspector, or his deputy,
shall upon examination adjudge and determine any fish to be
of a very superior quality, and the owner or owners thereof shall
furnish them with a branding iron, with the first letter of his christian
name and surname at full length, or the name of the firm at
full length, as the case may be, then and in that case the said inspector,
or his deputy, shall add the word prime, to No. 1, and also the
brand of the owner as aforesaid, and shall receive the sum of two
cents for each cask in addition to the other fees that are hereafter
by this law allowed.

    7.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That before the said inspector, or his
deputy, shall proceed to act as such, they shall give bond, with two
sufficient securities, to the state of Maryland, in the penal sum of
two thousand dollars, for the faithful discharge of their duties,
which said bond shall be lodged with the clerk of Baltimore county;
and they shall also take an oath, or affirmation, faithfully, and
without favour, affection, partiality or prejudice, to perform their
duties as prescribed by law; and any person or persons conceiving
himself, herself  or themselves, aggrieved by the conduct of either
the said inspector, or his deputy, may put the same in suit, in the
name of the state, endorsed for their use, and upon trial such
judgment shall be had as the justice and merits of the case may require.

    8.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That if any person or persons shall think
himself, herself or themselves, aggrieved by the judgment of the
said inspector, or his deputy, he, she or they, may at their option
sue their bond as aforesaid, or may apply to the mayor of the city
of Baltimore, who shall thereupon issue his warrant, directed to
three disinterested persons, well skilled in the goodness, quality,
and well curing of salted fish, to review and examine the same,
