            JOHN FRANCIS MERCER, ESQUIRE, GOVERNOR.

    28.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That nothing herein contained shall
be construed to extend to, or interfere with, any judgment of any
court which has sentenced any criminal to work on the public roads
of Baltimore county, or in making, cleaning and repairing, the
streets and bason of the city of Baltimore, but that every criminal
heretofore sentenced to work on the roads of Baltimore county, or
in making, cleaning and repairing, the streets and bason of the
city of Baltimore, shall continue to work and labour on the public
roads of Baltimore county or in making, cleaning and repairing,
the streets and bason of the city of Baltimore, as heretofore they
have been adjudged.

    29.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the justices of the levy court
may annually allow any supervisor by them to be appointed such
compensation for his services as they may deem reasonable.

    30.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the levy court are hereby authorised
and empowered to contract with any person or persons to
keep in repair any of the aforesaid turnpike roads, after the same
shall be completed as directed by this act, or such part thereof as
they shall think proper so to contract for.

    31.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That all laws heretofore passed respecting
turnpike roads in Baltimore county, inconsistent with or
repugnant to this law, be and the same are hereby repealed.

                                        CHAP. LXXX.
An Act to authorise the appointment of Visitors of the Gaol in Baltimore
                            County.

    1.  BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the justices of the levy court of Baltimore county be and they are
hereby authorised and required, at their meeting in January next,
and at their annual meeting in the month of October, during the
continuance of this act, to appoint eight discreet persons, four of
whom shall be residents of the county, and four of the city of Baltimore,
to visit and inspect the gaol of Baltimore county.

    2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of the said
persons so appointed, and they, or any two or more of them, are
hereby authorised and required, to visit and inspect the gaol of
Baltimore county, and the several apartments thereof, in which
debtors or criminals, or persons charged with criminal offences,
shall or may be confined, and to deliver, or cause to be delivered,
unto the gaoler, or his deputy, for the use and relief of the persons
so confined, any article of wearing apparel, bedding, provisions,
medicine, or any other thing which the humane and benevolent may
