CHAP. CXXV.
An act to authorise the raising a sum of money by Lottery, to aid
in
erecting a Church in Charles County. Lib.

1. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That
Samuel Hanson, senior, William Vincent, Thomas A. Davis, John
Matthews, Samuel Chapman and John Weems, are hereby appointed
managers, and they, or a majority of them, are authorised
to raise by way of a lottery or lotteries, a sum of money not exceeding
twenty thousand dollars over and above all expenses and commissions
on the sales of tickets, for the purpose of paying the expenses
already incurred in erecting a church in Port Tobacco Parish,
in Charles county, and such further expenses as may be necessary
to finish the said church in a manner suitable for a place
of public worship. |

2. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said managers,
or their
agents, may sell the tickets, or any of them, in any scheme of a
lottery which they shall make or propose for the purpose aforesaid,
or any interest therein, from time to time, as they may think proper,
and draw such lottery or scheme in any part of this state,
without being subject to the payment of any tax, penalty or forfeiture,
any law or ordinance to the contrary notwithstanding. |

sold in any part
of state. |
3. AND BE IT ENACTED, That before the said
managers shall
make or authorise any sale of tickets under this act, they shall
execute and file in the office of the clerk of Charles county court,
a bond to the state of Maryland, in the penal sum of forty thousand
dollars, with condition that they will well and truly pay to
the persons entitled to receive the same, all prizes which shall be
drawn in any scheme of a lottery that shall be made or proposed
by them in virtue of this act, the payment whereof shall be demanded
within twelve months after the conclusion of the drawing
of such scheme, and will apply all such sum as shall remain in
their hands, after the payment of prizes, commissions, and other
expenses, to the payment of the cost and charges of erecting and
finishing the church of Port Tobacco Parish, in Charles county. |
