An Act for extending North-Street, on the east side of Jones's Falls,
in the

Preamble. |
WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly,
by a number
of the inhabitants of the city and precincts of Baltimore, that
their convenience would be greatly promoted by the extension of
North street in a straight direction to Jones'-street; and the said
representation appearing reasonable and just, therefore, |

1. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That
the mayor of the city of Baltimore be, and he is hereby empowered,
to appoint five freeholders, inhabitants of the city and precincts,
not interested in the premises, commissioners, who, after having
given at least ten days notice in one or more of the public papers of
Baltimore, shall at any time before the first day of May next (a),
first being duly sworn, proceed to assess and value what damages
will be sustained by any person or persons whomsoever, by reason
of extending the aforesaid street, taking all benefits and inconveniencies
into consideration, and shall also declare what sum of money
each individual, benefitted thereby, shall respectively contribute
and pay towards compensating the person or persons injured by
the opening and extending the said street; and the names of the
person or persons, and the sums of money which they shall be respectively
obliged to pay, shall be returned, under the hands and
seals of the commissioners appointed as aforesaid, to the register
of the city, to be filed and kept in hi office; and the person or persons
benefitted by the opening and extending said street, shall respectively
pay the sum or sums of money so assessed and charged
to him, her or them, with interest thereon, at the rate of six per
cent. for the time limited for the payment thereof.

2. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the city commissioners
be and
they are hereby empowered, to open and extend the said street from
the point of its intersection with High street, in a straight direction,
until it intersects Jones'-street, and thence in a straight direction
to Jones's Falls (b); and the said street when so opened and extended,
and when the valuation and assessment herein before directed
to be made shall have taken place, shall be deemed and taken, and
is hereby declared to be, a public street and highway for ever thereafter;
and the said city commissioners are hereby required to return
a plot, ascertaining the limits and extent of the said street,
when so opened and extended, to the register of the city of Baltimore,
who shall receive and file the same as part of the plot of the
city of Baltimore; and in case the obstructions in the said street
are not removed within thirty days after the money charged and assessed
as aforesaid is paid or tendered, the city commissioners aforesaid
are hereby authorised and directed to remove the same without
delay, and to charge the expenses of such removal in proportions
among the several persons benefitted by the opening and extending
of the said street, according to the benefit which they may
have been estimated to have received agreeably to the assessment
and valuation aforesaid.
