CHAP. 69.

                                LAWS OF MARYLAND.

that the annual sum of one hundred pounds heretofore appropriated
by the levy court of Baltimore county for the building a
bridge over Jones's Falls, near the intersection of Jones and French-streets
in the precincts of said city, is not sufficient to enable the
commissioners to complete the building of said bridges, and have
prayed that a law may pass authorising and directing the levy
court of Baltimore county to assess and levy a sum of money sufficient
to complete the same; and the prayer of the petitioners appearing
reasonable, therefore,

    1.  BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the levy court of Baltimore county are hereby authorised to assess
and levy on the assessable property of said county, the sum of twelve
hundred dollars in addition to the annual sum they are now authorised
to levy (a), for the purpose of building a bridge over the falls
near the intersection of Jones and French-streets on the east side
of the falls, and Holliday and Bath-streets, on the west side, in the
precincts of the city of Baltimore, to be levied and collected as
other public monies are levied and collected in said county; and
the said sum of money, when so collected as aforesaid, shall be
paid over by the collector to the commissioners heretofore appointed,
or which may hereafter be appointed by the levy court of said
county, to superintend the building of said bridge.

    (a)  See 1807, ch. 31.  By November 1812, ch. 58, an additional sum to be levied.

Commissioners to
take bonds from
workmen.
    2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of said commissioners
to take a bond or bonds from the workman or workmen
to be employed by them for the building of said bridge, in the sum
of four thousand dollars, for the faithful building and constructing
of said bridge; and that the materials thereof shall be strong,
sound and substantial; and that said bonds shall not be cancelled until
said commissioners shall have made report to the levy court of
Baltimore county, that said bridge hath been finished agreeably to
contract.

                                        CHAP. LXX.
An Act to regulate the Inspection of Lumber.  Lib. TH. No. 3, fol. 87.

                                            A Supplement, 1817, ch. 141.

Governor and
council to appoint
inspectors.
    1.  BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the governor, by and with the advice and consent of the council,
shall immediately on the passage of this act, and in every year
thereafter, appoint four or more (b) inspectors of lumber for the city
and county of Baltimore, and as many more in other parts of this
state as may from time to time be necessary.

    (b)  By the act of 1817, ch. 141, the number of inspectors is not to exceed
eight, and no person to act as such except those appointed by the governor and
council.

Inspectors oath.     2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said inspectors hereafter to
be appointed, before they enter upon the execution of their offices,
shall take the following oath or affirmation, (as the case may be,)
before some person authorised to administer the same, viz. " I do
solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully, truly and impartially,
according to the best of my judgment, skill and understanding,
execute, do and perform the office and duty of an inspector of
lumber, according to the true intent and meaning of the laws of
this state, relative to the same; so help me God."
