( 41 ) ffebruary 11th: 1690/1 known her before to his very great admiration, and he the Deponent querying with his said wife, what was the matter or cause of her being so much cast down, she the Deponents wife gave me her husband the like information though with some agrievations as to above written Concerning her Cousin Oxford and that he came upon the Sabbath day to make his filthy profers as aforesd, and did most violently insist and mannage his lewd provocations to act uncleaness with my said wife Adding that if ever I the Deponent went abroad again she would never stay more at home alone to be so abused as she had been by her sd Cousin, praying and intreating me the Deponent to use all possible and speedy means to our remove from that place where we then lived further of from her Kinsman. I the Deponent further declare that upon my wifes said complaint made to me, I went forthwith to the house of Thomas Oxford and in the presence of divers persons there challenged him for his base carriage and filthy profers to my wife as aforesd sharply rebuking for the same who gave me no other satisfaction except to scoffe and deride at me and laugh at his own folly this Deponent saith and further saith not John: J Saunders Memorandum that this day being the 29th. of 10 ber Came his marke. the Deponent Jno. Saunders and made Oath upon the holy Evangelists of the truth of all above written as his deposition Witness my hand. Samll. Hopkins --- } Somerset County Ssc. Upon Information brought & given me at my own house by sundry persons That Thomas Oxford Some years since did take in hand to goe to the house of John. Pope, and there finding her the sd Jno. Popes wife at home and her husband abroad, did in a base lustfull and lacivious manner discourse and handle the said John: Popes wife I requiring the truth of the said information from the wife of John: Pope aforesaid she saith and declareth as followeth (to witt) that sundry years past, the said Thomas Oxford Came to her house her husband being from home,. and did then and there behave himselfe most rudely, laciviously and wickedly both in words and actions, basely and filthily proffering to know what I had under my apron and notwithstanding the utmost opposition I could make both by words and other endeavours used to prevent the said Oxford in his said Sordid and vile proceedings, he still insisted and persued the same so violently to handle my body, getting his hand under my Coats and Such like filthy carriages as is a shame to relate, of all which I did relate to my husband after his return hime - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ann: Pope Anne Pope the wife of John: Pople Ann aforesd appeared before me and made signum. --- Oath to the truth of her relation above written this 17th. day of Decembr 1690 Samll. Hopkins - - - - - - - - - The aforesaid Jury having deliberately heard the aforesd proceedings, as also the Oaths of Sarah:Saunders and Martin Trantram, receives their Charge and are sent forth to determine the matter. - - - - - - And having thorow =ly considered the premises do retourn in Court being unnamously agreed, brings in this following verdict. which being read in the audience of the said Oxford as followeth. (viz) wee of the Jury finds Tho:Oxford guilty Richard: Chambers foreman The Court Orders the verdict to be entered. // Order Likewise Thomas: Oxford fined for breach of Sabbath according to Law. Ord also the sd Oxford fined 60:dayes worke diet & tools. Order Oxford give good Security for his behaviour dureing pleasure. Order. that sd Oxford doe crave pardon of the sd Sarah Saunders and her Husband at the two first sabbath dayes at Snow hill in publick. Assembly. Whereupon Came the said Thomas Oxford and pr Recognizance, did acknowledge him Self indebted to their Maties Wm & Mary King & Queen of England &c.the just Sum of 30!.Sterling money of England due to be leavied upon his goods and chattels lands and Tenements for their Maties uses &c. Likewise came the sd Oxfords two Securities viz Jno Smock and Richard: Holland and did like manner as aforesd acknowledge themSelves indebted in the sum of fifteen pounds a piece like money to be leavied as abovesd.
