The Speaker laid before the House the following commu-
nication :
WASHINGTON, February 8th, 1872.
To the How,. A. P, Gorman,
Speaker of the House of Delegates :
DEAR SIR—We deem if proper to call your attention, and
through you, the attention or the Legislature of Maryland to
the provisions of the Act of Congress of July 2d, 1854, (15th
Statutes at Large, p. 347.) directing the President to invite
the several States to provide and furnish statues in marble or
bronze, not exceeding two in number of each State, of deceased
citizens, illustrious for historic renown, or for distinguish-
ed civic or military service, and such as the State shall de-
termine to be worthy of national commentation—which statues
are to be placed in the Old Hall of Representatives of the
Capital, which Hall is set apart as a Natural History Hall,
for the purposes above described.
The State of Maryland, one of the "Old Thirteen," whose
sons stood among the most. illustrious in the field, in council,
and I'D Legislative Assemblies, should be among the first to
avail herself of this opportunity of doing honor to the mem-
ory of her mighty dead. ' '
We, her present Representatives in Congress, feel it in-
cumbent upon us to urge upon the Legislature 01 the State
the importance of taking immediate steps, to render her prop-
er contributions to the Statuary Hall, and to place there, for
the admiration of future generations, the effigies of those
citizens, whose great examples shed a perpetual light along
the pathway of human progress.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Federal
Relations.
Mr. Feig presented the petition of J. C. Textor, find seven-
ty-six other citizens, asking the abolishment of coopering in
the Penitentiary.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Manu-
factures.
Mr. Riley presented the petition of Jos. J. Cann, and
others, remonstrating against the sale of liquors, in the 5th
district of Harford county.
