CHAPTER 360.
AN ACT to incorporate the Maryland Academy of
Art.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That John II. B. Latrobe, Andrew J. H.
Way, George B. Coale, Alien C. Redwood, William
H. Graham, S. Teackle Wallis, William Prescott
Smith, William H. Carpenter, A. R. Fulton, Israel
Cohen, Joseph II. Meredith, Louis McLane, A. J.
Volck, Archibald George, L. Rabillon, John W.
Torsch, and E. G. Lind, be and they are hereby
created a body politic and corporate under the name
and style of the Maryland Academy of Art, and by
that name may have and change at pleasure a com-
mon seal, may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, in any court of competent jurisdiction, and
generally enjoy all such privileges and immunities,
and exercise and have such powers, rights and privi-
leges as may be necessary and useful in reference to
the objects of their incorporation.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the object of said
corporation shall be to promote art, and the cultiva-
tion of art taste in the community; to give opportu-
nity to artists for the exhibition of their works, and
for a free intercourse with lovers of art, and to fur-
nish the means of study in the broadest and most
liberal sense, by the establishment of professorships,
opening of schools of art in all its branches, the hold-
ing of exhibitions, the awarding of premiums, and
with full power, in reference to all these matters, to
establish such by-laws, rules and regulations, as they
may deem proper in the premises.
SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the said corpora-
tion shall be and they are hereby authorized to hold
real estate on which to erect such buildings as may
be required for their purposes, not to exceed in value
two hundred thousand dollars.
SEC. 4. And be. it enacted. That on the first Monday
in April, in each and every year, the members of the
said corporation shall elect sixteen directors, who,
with a President, to be elected at the same time,
