led or driven horse, one cent per mile; and for every
pleasure carriage or vehicle, the above rates, and
one-half of said rates additional, and in the same
proportion for half a mile, when the distance is more
than one-fourth of a mile; and for one mile when
the distance traveled is more than half-a-mile; provided, that nothing herein contained shall prevent
said company commuting for toll by the week, month,
or year.
SEC. 2. And he it enacted. That this Act shall take
effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 218.
AN ACT to repeal sections fifteen, seventeen,
eighteen and twenty-one, of article seventy-eight,
of the Code of Public General Laws, entitled
" Refuge, House of," and to amend and re-enact
said sections as amended, and to add a supple-
mental section twenty-two to said article.
SECTION 1. -Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That the fifteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth
and twenty-first sections, of article seventy-eight, of
the Code of Public General Laws, he and the same
are hereby repealed, and the said sections be and the
same are hereby respectively amended and re-enacted
to read respectively as follows:
SEC. 15. The Board of Managers shall have power
in their discretion, to take into said house all such
white male children as shall be taken up and com-
mitted as street beggars or vagrants, or shall be con-
victed of criminal offences, or as hereinafter provided
for in the case of application of parents or guardians.
SEC. 17. The managers of the House of Refuge
shall have power to bind out the white male children
